Autumn Jamming!
Fèis Latharna held a teenage group work weekend during November in Oban.
Youngsters from Oban and Mull were given expert tuition by tutors such as Jim Hunter the well known singer songwriter from Lochaline who helped aspiring song-writers focus on the fundamentals involved in writing songs. Other tutors were Silas Sinclair from Connel who was there to help young box players understand the technicalities involved in jamming sessions. The third musician was Patrea Cooney from Mull, with clàrsach, fiddle and voice. Such was the talent among the tutors, but the talent amongst the youngsters was also to say the least phenomenal.

The participants held a jamming session on the Friday night in the Oban Youth Hostel and attracted quite an audience of other hostel residents both Scottish and foreign. Comments included “this is wonderful Scottish music”, and “to hear the Gaelic songs has made our visit to Oban even more special”. The next day was spent understanding the rudiments of playing together.
Fèis Latharna have received substantial lottery funding and are hoping to increase their range of activities, they are especially hoping to target the teenagers by attracting groups such as Croft No 5 and Session A9 to hold future sound and band workshops. Ken MacKenzie, the Fèis chairperson, says “anyone wishing to find out more about what the Fèis have planned, would be most welcome to attend their EGM on Thursday the 2nd December 8pm at the Undercroft Church Centre, Glencruitten. We are always looking for new committee members to help us widen the horizon of Fèis Latharna.”
