Spring Workshops

So far this year there have been four one-day workshops: Accordion, clarsach, whistle, fiddle, Gaelic singing and drama, guitar and chanter and step-dancing.

They were great fun and enjoyed by all.

The accordion workshops were taken by John Sommerville who plays with the group Croft No 5 and by Neil Gunn an accomplished accordion player from Glasgow.

The clarsach classes were run by Toni Russell and Karen Marshalsay aided by Kirsty MacKenzie. Clarsach is always popular as Toni has over the years built up a strong clarsach tuition base.

This season, the Gaelic singing tutor was Callum Alig MacMillan originally from Lewis and a past winner of the Traditional Singing Gold medal.

The whistle classes were taught by Micha Sommerville (brother of John) Micha also entertained the children at lunch times by playing the saxophone, leading to several requests for sax tuition!

Fiddle classes, which are always popular, were given by Anne Barlow from Taynult. Anne has been a Fèis Latharna regular for some years now and provides not only fiddle tuition but her band play regularly at Fèis ceilidhes.

Gaelic drama tuition had two tutors this year. Catriona Montgomery (last year's National Mod Gaelic Bard) did a session. The remaining three sessions were by Mairi Morrison originally from Lewis but now living in Glasgow.

Budding guitarists were taught by Finlay Wells and Angus Smith both well known Oban players and successful recording artists in their own right.

Step-dancing classes were taught by Shona MacLellan, originally from South Uist but now living in Inverness.

Last but by no means least, chanter classes this season were by Kevin Moffat. Kevin is a well known face on the pipe and chanter scene in and around Oban.
